Venues/Upcoming Races

Update March 8, 2022 - Arbor Day Celebration - Keep McAllen Beautiful occurred on March 5, 2022 and was a tree-mendous success. This was the fourth time for us and it was great to see some of our old friends at the event. McAllen knows how to put together a great event and this was no exception. The races went off like clockwork and the courses were well marked. (For those of you who know me I have no internal compass and have inadvertently ended up running a 10K when I was supposed to go 5K because I missed the signs lol). That was not an issue in this event. Closed roadway, lead vehicles, and volunteers helped keep you from veering off the course.

The festivities included drummers, a 20 foot tall canine, games and giveaways not to mention instructive vendors and of course the trees!

The volunteers, tree experts organizers and sponsors did a fantastic job! We look forward to the 2023 Arbor Day event.

Enjoy the following photos of some of the days events!

Next up for our team is the International Race 5K and 10K in Mexico!!

UPDATE: March 27, 2022 - International Race 5K and 10K - Put on by Mi TIEMPO.com.mx. This 1st time event took place this morning at the Villa Florida in Reynosa, Mexico. The weather was clear, about 61 degrees at start time with a 10 mph wind. All in all, good conditions  for a 5 and 10K race with this spectacular US and Mexico theme.

The Villa Florida park was filled with both red, white and blue and red, white and green as many participants opted to sport the unique (and really awesome) split T-Shirt.

After correcting a short snafu with the timing clock the participants were off and running. This course is grueling as you start out with 800 meters of uphill pain followed by a quick reprieve of roughly 300 meters downhill.

From there it levels out for another 450 meters until you are faced with what I have now dubbed The Gran Colina (which is a 770 meter beast of a hill). Gran Colina is responsible for taking out the steam of many a participant. Fortunately what goes up generally works its way back down therefore you are blessed with a straightaway that gently descends. From there you start the final leg which of course is a 300 meter uphill trek. Once you have cleared that it is an 800 meter shot down hill straight to the finish line.

Three of the Runners without Borders team members were represented at the race and all did well. Two third places and a personal best were recorded for the team. Marie Elena did an awesome job taking 3rd in her age group!! Well done everyone!

The Overall Winner was Eleanor Perales coming in with a 20:45 edging out Alejandro Garcia by 5 seconds. Young Federico Hernandez deserves a shout out for his 21:02 time as well. Great job guys!

Enjoy the sights from the rest of the day. Congratulations to all the runners, volunteers, supporters, sponsors and organizers!

Buenos suerte to all!!

Carlsbad 5000 Worlds Fastest 5K - Co-owned by Mel Keflezighi who is an Olympic Silver Medalist in the Marathon, a NYC Marathon Champion and a Boston Marathon Champion to name just a few. This is a beautiful course which I had the pleasure of running in 2019. All the big name runners have run this course at some point. This race has been presented annually in Southern California for 35 years with the exception of the COVID year. My team and I will be participating this year and I am very excited. The people line the streets to cheer the runners, you have the Pacific Ocean on your right beckoning you to do your best and an announcer that brings you a quasi play by play while making the audience laugh at the same time. My favorite part of the course is the downhill finish! There is a train that might cross your path before you reach the finish line but that is all part of the experience. I highly recommend this event to all runners. You can match yourself up against the best in the world or just enjoy the amazing scenery that Carlsbad is proud to share with its runners. https://carlsbad5000.com/

September 25, 2022 - Max Wok and Run - This is a must! We have run this race several times and enjoyed it thoroughly. It is professionally done, great staff and volunteers, accurate time keeping, and they have since moved it off the precarious Blvd. las Fuentes to the Villa Florida Park in Reynosa, Mexico. This is a challenging course with a steep incline lasting 1/2 mile right after the 1 mile mark. There is also another hill around the 2.5 mile mark. The good news is that there is a nice downhill to the finish line approximately 1/3 mile long. While this is an industrial park the promoters do a nice job keeping you safe. There is something special about the atmosphere of this race. The electricity in the air is magical while the drone flying overhead takes it all in to share with us later. This race brings some of the top competitors from Mexico and Texas. Stick around after the race to talk to some of the most wonderful runners you will ever meet. This year the event offers a 1K, 5K, 10K and a half-marathon. Register for this one soon!
