Heroes with Hearts

Image
One of Runners without Borders own, Andres Kaufman, brought home the gold at this years South Texas Health Systems Heroes with Hearts 5K Race which took place right here in McAllen, Texas this morning. Mother Nature did her best to level her winter wrath on McAllen, presenting temperatures associated more with Canada than Texas while dropping a steady rain in the area creating a wind chill of 35F(1.6C) and slippery conditions. But the runners were undaunted and persevered the elements. Andres made an excellent showing slogging through the conditions and posted a 25:04 time to take the 40-49 first place trophy! We here at Run the Course wish to express our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Kaufman. South Texas Health Systems does a great job not only putting on a great event every year but also serves the community by providing vital medical information to all of us. This year STHS mission was to promote heart healthy behavior and dedicated the event to the Rio Grande Valley's own H...

Learning From Prior Races

Hello! Like most runners I strive to improve my running experience, pursue new personal bests, and enjoy the friendships and acquaintances of my fellow runners. I have started a promising new 12 week training program in preparation for the Carlsbad 5000 coming up on May 22, 2022. My previous time was a disappointing 25:22 putting me in 445th place out of the 1008 competitors in the Masters Men Over 40 age group. When I finally shook it off I took the time to break down the race and identify what I need to do differently this time.  First, for some unknown reason I left the starting line trying to keep up with the leaders, (that was silly since the winner, James Thie, did a 15:18 time, which is ...

Runners are truly an awesome lot. We have all heard or read about runners who have assisted their fellow collapsed dehydrated runners over the finish line in major events such as the London Marathon, the Okpekpe International and the NYC Marathon. However, what I am talking about are the selfless small acts of kindness that happen in practically every race but does not garner the media attention. I run across these acts of kindness at almost every race venue I attend. Like the simple encouragement given to you by the runner standing next to you during those anxiety ridden pre-race minutes where you find yourself jumping up and down to keep loose and to quell those ever increasing butterflies that always seem to want to dance in your stomach just before the start of a race. Or just after the race the kind soul that helps you open that water bottle top that seems to have been sealed at the factory by the Terminator, when you can barely blink let alone twist off that top.  Duri...
